Tensions are rising in Kasoa following reports of harassment and assault allegedly linked to the immediate past MP and parliamentary candidate, Hawa Koomson.

On the evening of January 26, information reaching party officials indicated that machomen associated with Hawa Koomson confronted and harassed supporters of Bryan Acheampong’s campaign in the Kasoa enclave. Eyewitnesses, including one of the Bryan Cordinators, Felix, narrated how they were beaten and intimidated by the team.

By the morning of January 27, further details emerged suggesting that Hawa Koomson herself was present at the party office and allegedly ordered the assault. Victims reportedly spent the night between the police station and the hospital receiving treatment, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.

This development comes against the backdrop of Hawa Koomson’s own recent ordeal. During the Ablekuma North by-election, she was reportedly assaulted by NDC-aligned groups, an incident that drew widespread condemnation. Observers note that the current Kasoa episode adds another layer of tension to Ghana’s already charged political atmosphere, raising concerns.

Party members are now calling on headquarters to clarify security arrangements at regional, constituency, and national levels, stressing the urgent need for protection of supporters during Saturdays election. They argue that without clear measures, such incidents risk undermining confidence in the democratic process and discouraging grassroots participation.

For many in Kasoa, the situation feels like a cycle of harassment orchestrated by Hawa Koomson, a known supporter of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia. Supporters are urging leadership to step in decisively, not only to safeguard lives but also to restore calm and ensure that political competition remains peaceful and fair.

The case has since been reporter to the Kasoa police, and statements taken.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akwatia by-election candidate, Kwame Asumadu, has appealed to party members and Ghanaians to uphold peace, unity, and discipline ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31.

Mr. Asumadu made the call while speaking to the media after a peace walk to mobilise support in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region. He urged supporters to reject violence, bitterness, and internal division before, during, and after the primaries, stressing that political leadership must be anchored in unity rather than conflict.

According to him, leadership is ordained by God and should be pursued with humility, respect, and a commitment to the collective good of the party and the nation.

Mr. Asumadu noted that the strength of the NPP has always rested in its ability to remain united, particularly at critical moments such as the selection of a presidential candidate. He therefore called on party members to place the interest of the NPP above individual ambitions and work together to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

He further emphasised that peaceful internal processes are essential to maintaining public confidence in the party and positioning it as a credible alternative for governance.

Some NPP members who took part in the walk explained that the exercise was aimed at energising the grassroots and promoting reconciliation within the party. They noted that the call for peace and unity is especially significant as the party seeks to heal internal divisions following its defeat in the September by-election.

Participants expressed optimism that the message of unity will help consolidate support and foster harmony as the party prepares for the upcoming primaries.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is fully prepared for its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with all key preparatory processes successfully completed and attention now shifting to voting day.

Party officials say that balloting for positions on the ballot paper has been carried out, determining the order in which aspirants will appear when delegates cast their votes. Among the five contestants, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong secured position number one, followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

Preparations have included a nationwide voter register exhibition and verification exercise to ensure accuracy in the Electoral College list ahead of the primaries. Officials also organised the printing and distribution of ballot papers, completed security planning, and emphasized party discipline including barring private security from voting centres to ensure an orderly process.

Aspiring flagbearers have ramped up their campaigns and outreach to delegates in recent weeks, with calls for unity and peaceful conduct ahead of the vote. Kennedy Agyapong has publicly appealed for peace across the party as the competition intensifies.

Political analysts and party supporters are watching closely, with some observers projecting strong support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the primaries.

A total of 214,812 delegates are expected to participate in the voting, underscoring the scale and significance of the internal election.

With all administrative and organisational hurdles now behind it, the NPP is focused on ensuring that voting day unfolds smoothly and transparently, as delegates prepare to elect the candidate who will lead the party into the 2028 general election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set up a joint committee to review the final proposals submitted by the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) to President John Dramani Mahama and advise the party’s National Council on an official position.

The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, disclosed this in a statement on Facebook on Tuesday, December 23, following the CRC’s submission of its final report to the President on Monday.

Nana Boakye explained that the committee was previously constituted as part of the NPP’s engagement in the constitution review process, tasked with developing and presenting the party’s proposals to the CRC.

The committee is jointly chaired by the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, and the Chairman of the NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Committee, Frank Davies Esq.

“With the submission of the CRC’s final proposals to the President, the General Secretary has directed the joint committee to carefully study the proposals and advise the National Council accordingly,” Nana Boakye said.

He emphasised that the move reflects the party’s structured and consultative approach to constitutional reform, ensuring its response is based on thorough analysis and collective deliberation.

The joint committee comprises senior party figures and MPs, including Hassan Tampuli,  O.B. Amoah,  Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Gary Nimako Esq., Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, Fati Abubakar, and Hanifa Adjoa Yahaya.

Nana Boakye urged party members and supporters to exercise restraint in public commentary on the CRC proposals while the internal review is ongoing.

“All party members are encouraged to be cautious with their commentary on the proposals of the CRC as we await the outcome of the joint committee’s study,” he said.

He assured that the NPP’s official position on the final proposals would be communicated in due course, signalling the party’s intention to speak with one voice once consultations are concluded.

“The position of the Party on the final proposals submitted yesterday will soon be made public,” Nana Boakye added.
